Jeff, you didn't mention if you are fly fishing or what. The Madison and its headwaters are fly fishing only. If you are fly fishing, I definitely recommend the Firehole. It's such a unique stream because of the lava bottom and thermal features. The fishing can be tough; the trout seem to be extremely well educated. The Lamar can have some good fishing at that time - hoppers maybe and a large green drake mayfly. The headwaters of the Gardner (Obsidian Creek etc) is full of small brook trout that are usually easy to catch. Suggestion - ask at one of the fly shops in West Yellowstone or the one in Gardner for advice. Some of them have good web sites with fishing info posted as well.
